What Five Brands Pay to Win Back an Abandoned Cart

We abandoned carts at five DTC brands. ROKA offers nothing, Liquid I.V. pays 10%, Magic Spoon sends cereal, and Cyrusher holds out for a week.

What Five Brands Pay to Win Back an Abandoned Cart

Abandon a cart and every brand faces the same decision: chase you for free, or pay you to come back.

We left carts behind at five brands in our gallery database — captured between October 2024 and March 2026 — and let the recovery flows run. The answers ranged from no offer at all to $100 off.

ROKA: two nudges, nothing else

ROKA's first nudge landed about 22 minutes after we left checkout: "Nice choice!" A day later came "The finish line is so close!" — the same minimal template with the headline swapped, one CTA each: "RETURN TO CHECKOUT".

No discount in either. Then the flow ends. (Both renders price the wetsuit at "$174,800.00" — a currency-formatting glitch, possibly on our end.)

Liquid I.V. waits 20 hours before paying

Liquid I.V.'s opener came about 30 minutes in: "Uh oh 😰 You dropped this" — guilt plus a 60-day money-back guarantee, no code.

The money shows up around 20 hours later: "10% OFF YOUR CART 🛒", with a personalized one-time code. No expiry stated. Forty-eight hours after the code, the same template returns under "ENDS TONIGHT" — the deadline lives in the subject line; the body never names one.

Magic Spoon pays in cereal

Magic Spoon's day-0 email is a plain reminder: "Hey there! Looks like you forgot something". Its fine print is stranger than its offer — "*Offer ends 11/27 at 11:59pm PST" sits under an email with no offer, sent on December 9. Whether that's a leftover Black Friday line, only the brand knows.

The real move lands on day 3: a free box of Fruity cereal, auto-added to your cart, "code expires in 3 days". The last call two days later shortens the fuse to 24 hours. No percent sign in the flow — in our whole Magic Spoon capture, storewide percent-off never appears.

Eight Sleep adds $50 — and never raises it

In our October 2024 capture, Eight Sleep's welcome email already carried $150 off with code FIRSTSLEEP. The cart email arrived 64 minutes later: "Forget something?" — an extra $50, code EMAIL50, plus the Pod reframed as "$71/month" through Affirm.

The day-3 closer doesn't raise the number. "Don't let your special offer go to waste" holds the same $50 and swaps the argument to risk reversal: full refund, shipping covered. No deadline appears in any body — urgency stays in the subject lines.

Cyrusher: a week of no, then $100

Cyrusher's opener shows the carted e-bike with its total rendered raw: "Total Price: 1499.0". What follows is days of daily persuasion — a support-agent note, benefit stacks, social proof — with the bike at $1,499 in every email that shows a price.

Six days in, "Are you sure you want to let this go?" still carries no code. The $100 code finally arrives on day 7. We tore this flow down email by email in a separate article; the short version is that the sell price never moves.

Five flows, five prices on the same walked-away shopper: nothing, 10%, a free box, $50, $100. Whether any of them beat a plain reminder, only the dashboards know.

What we noticed

  • Four of the five first touches carry no offer at all — the money, where it exists, arrives on a delay. Eight Sleep is the exception, stacking $50 on its welcome code at +64 minutes.
  • At Liquid I.V. and Eight Sleep, deadlines live in subject lines — "ENDS TONIGHT" and the closer both leave the body deadline-free.
  • Nobody escalates the amount. Liquid I.V.'s 10% never grows, Eight Sleep's $50 stays flat, Magic Spoon just shortens the fuse, and Cyrusher's $100 arrives once and stays.
