Eight Sleep Puts an Asterisk on 25 of 26 Subject Lines

Five weeks of Eight Sleep campaigns: 25 of 26 subjects end in an asterisk. What each footnote walks back — and the one subject that needed none.

Eight Sleep Puts an Asterisk on 25 of 26 Subject Lines

Between April 5 and May 11, 2026, we captured 26 Eight Sleep campaigns. 25 of the 26 subject lines end with an asterisk. It isn't decoration — each one points into the footer fine print, and on the claim and offer subjects, which disclaimer it is depends on what the subject just promised.

Results claims get the asterisk

When the subject states an outcome — "Clinically proven: 34% more deep sleep*", "Lower heart rate, higher HRV, sharper focus*", "fall asleep 44% faster*" — the asterisk resolves to the same footer line every time: "Individual results vary and may not be guaranteed."

The subject and the body don't carry the claim equally. "Clinically proven: 34% more deep sleep" is flat in the inbox; inside the email it becomes "Up to 34% more deep sleep*". The strongest version of the number lives where the disclaimer isn't visible yet.

Offers get one too

The promo subjects — "Get $100 off and track your sleep*", "Save $100 on deeper sleep tonight*", "Last chance for $100 off this month*" — footnote to a different line: "Email exclusive offer. Valid only on select products. Exclusions apply."

So the inbox view is a clean claim or a clean number, and the fine print waits at the bottom of the scroll. Same mechanic, two disclaimer tracks: one for the science, one for the money.

See how it works

The double asterisk has exactly one job

A second notation runs underneath: "**" marks the 5-year warranty in the trust bar that closes every send we captured, and on all but one of them it resolves to the same condition — the warranty requires an Enhanced Autopilot purchase.

The Pregnancy-mode launch on May 5 shows the system flexing. For that send the footer swaps in "The Pod is not a medical device" and repoints the double asterisk: "**Active Autopilot subscription required for Pregnancy mode." New feature, new footnote, same grammar.

The one subject that needed nothing

The exception is what makes the system look deliberate. "Introducing Autopilot 4.0" — April 23, the software launch — is the only subject in the five weeks with no asterisk. It makes no results claim and carries no offer, so there's nothing to walk back.

Even "Welcome" picked one up

The system wasn't always there. Our October 2024 welcome email is titled "Welcome to Eight Sleep" — no asterisk, code FIRSTSLEEP in the body. The February 2026 welcome is "Welcome to Eight Sleep*", footnoted to the email-exclusive offer terms.

Somewhere between those two signups, a legal notation layer was bolted onto the subject line itself. Whether that came from lawyers, a platform review, or policy, only Eight Sleep knows.

What we noticed

  • In five weeks of campaigns, 25 of 26 subjects end in an asterisk — a consistent notation system, not an occasional footnote: one disclaimer track for results claims, another for offers, and a double asterisk reserved for the warranty condition.
  • The subject often states the claim harder than the body: "Clinically proven: 34%" in the inbox becomes "Up to 34%*" inside. The inbox gets the confident version.
  • The one asterisk-free subject is the send that claims nothing — which suggests the footnotes are mapped to promises, not pasted by default. Whether readers notice the asterisks at all, only Eight Sleep's test results know.
