Original Grain Said "Nothing Better on Black Friday"
The watch brand promised on Nov 3 that Black Friday wouldn't beat its deal. We logged every deadline that followed — and how the promise held.

On November 3, 2024 — three and a half weeks before Thanksgiving — a letter from Original Grain's marketing guy landed in our inbox: "This deal ends on Thanksgiving, and we're not offering anything better on Black Friday."
We kept everything the watch brand sent after that. Here's how the deadline actually behaved.
The best deal of the year, three weeks early
The November 3 letter opens the "Better-Than-Black-Friday Sale": up to $100 off, plus a free $100 gift card shipped with the watch. The pitch leans on inside knowledge: "The deal that's available on our website today is BETTER than our Black Friday deal (and you can trust me, I've seen the marketing calendar for the rest of the year)."
That offer then rides for three weeks — Whiskey Wednesday specials, Taylor Guitars features, a Veterans Day letter — and in our log, the next dated deadline doesn't appear until November 26's "before Black Friday" fine print.

OpenLast call, then Black Friday
November 27: "LAST CALL", and the promise gets repeated — "This deal ends tomorrow night, and we're not offering anything better on Black Friday."
November 29: "Black Friday Starts Now!" Same up-to-$100 off — but the free gift card is now $50 instead of $100. The promise held, by making Black Friday the smaller deal.
At the product level it gets blurrier. Black Friday's Brewmaster Chrono went $369 to $249 — a $120 cut sitting under a "SAVE $100 OFF" hero, billed as "At Our Lowest Price Ever!".

OpenSaturday: "YOU MISSED BLACK FRIDAY?!"
On Saturday, November 30 at 17:05 UTC, a guilt email arrived: "YOU MISSED BLACK FRIDAY?! THERE'S STILL TIME TO SHOP OUR BEST DEALS, CURE YOUR GUILT WITH OUR BEST SELLERS!"
You hadn't missed it. A Black Friday–branded send had gone out that same day at 13:00, and two more followed at 19:01 and 21:00.

OpenThe midnight that moved to Wednesday
December 2, 02:05 UTC, subject "Secret time": a Cyber early-access letter, closing with "PS - do me a favor, if anyone asks... you got this e-mail monday at 8am - THANK YOU!"
Then, at 23:45 that night: "Our Cyber Monday sale ISN'T ending tonight". The body explains it's "running until Wednesday", and the evidence is a screenshot of a text message from co-founder Ryan, listing which collections would sell out by Wednesday, with the reply "Yupp, will do". Whether that text ever existed outside the email template, only the brand knows.
Tuesday was still Cyber, Thursday was Christmas
December 3 was Giving Tuesday, and Original Grain sent a mission-forward email for it. Its hero button still reads "SHOP THE CYBER SALE" — consistent with the Wednesday extension, or a leftover template. Both readings fit.
December 5, one day after the extended Cyber end: "CHRISTMAS SALE STARTS TODAY!" Up to $100 off, free ring code, bundles — the same chassis, re-skinned.
January: five weeks early, again
January 7: "Valentine's Day Sale Starts Now!" — five-plus weeks before February 14, running "SAVE UP TO $100 OFF". The calendar that opened Black Friday in early November opens Valentine's in the first week of January.

OpenWhat we noticed
- The November 3 promise held on a technicality: the up-to-$100 stayed, the free gift card halved to $50 — so Black Friday really wasn't better. It was smaller.
- Of the 36 promotional beats in our log from November 3 to January 15, only five state any deadline. "FLASH DEAL", "LAST CALL", and "SELLING FAST" mostly ride with no date attached.
- Sale names change faster than the offer: Better-Than-Black-Friday, Black Friday, Cyber, Christmas, and Valentine's all ran the same up-to-$100 chassis.
